2026 Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Given that a collection of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. But, their popularity has noticeably increased in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are bona fide titles centered on frogs.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To grasp this rise, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The results tell a compelling story: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's rising status in the cultural zeitgeist is partially apparent elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming seems especially pronounced.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Frankly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent appealing traits for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and grappling abilities lend themselves to a wide array of innovative control schemes.
A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year for amphibian gaming.
Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a true croaking cultural moment.
